Help · Returns

Returns.

If something we made isn't right (the wrong tin arrived, the salve smells off, the wool sweater doesn't fit) we want to hear from you. Here is how that works.

The thirty-day window.

You have thirty days from the day your order is delivered to start a return. We don't track the exact hour USPS scanned the package; if you're a day or two over, write to us anyway. We're reasonable about reasonable things.

What's returnable, and what isn't.

Consumables

Salves, teas, syrup, and anything else that goes on or in a person are not returnable once opened. We can't resell something that's been in your medicine cabinet, and we won't pretend otherwise. If a consumable arrives damaged in transit, or if a sealed jar is defective in some way you can describe, we'll replace it; no return shipment necessary. Send a photo with your message.

Textiles & tools

Wool socks, wool blankets, the canvas waxing kit, and anything else from our textiles or tools shelf are returnable unworn and unused, with original tags or packaging where applicable. If you've worn the socks around the house for an evening to test the fit, that's fine; we mean unworn the way a careful person means it. If you've taken them on a moose hunt, that's a different conversation.

A damaged-in-transit claim always gets replaced. Always.

How to start a return.

  1. Email us at info@midnightsunmercantile.com with your order number (it's in your shipping confirmation) and a sentence about what's going on.
  2. For damaged or defective items, attach a photo. We don't need a courtroom-grade exhibit; a phone snapshot of the cracked jar or the leaking tin is plenty.
  3. We'll write back within two business days, usually the same day. If it's a damage claim, we'll arrange a replacement immediately and you don't need to ship anything back.
  4. If it's a textile or tool return, we'll send you a prepaid USPS label. Drop the package at any post office or in any blue collection box.
  5. Once the return is back in Houston and we've inspected it, we refund the original payment method within three business days. You'll get an email when that happens.

Return shipping costs.

If the return is our fault (wrong item, defective item, damaged in transit) we cover shipping both ways. If you've simply changed your mind about a textile or tool, we cover the return label but the original outbound shipping isn't refunded. If your order qualified for free shipping the first time, we deduct the actual shipping cost we paid from the refund. We tell you that number in advance.

What if it's been longer than thirty days.

Write to us anyway. The thirty-day line is the default, not a wall. If something we made failed at six months in a way that suggests we did it wrong, we want to know about it; that's exactly the kind of thing the batch ledger is for.
